New $50 million hotel to be built at Canberra Airport

The Canberra Airport has unveiled designs for a $50 million hotel to be built near the terminal to cater for travellers.

Construction work is scheduled to begin within weeks on the 4.5 star hotel.

The 191 room building will be located 150 metres from the terminal.

The airport estimates the new hotel will create 600 new jobs during the building phase and 200 ongoing positions.

The hotel will include conference facilities and target the business and leisure market.

The Airport's managing director Stephen Byron says it will boost efforts to attract an international carrier to start direct flights to Canberra.

Mr Byron says it is a significant boost to efforts to lure an international carrier.

"Part of being an international airport is having an airport hotel," he said.

"Certainly that makes us more accessible to the region and makes us more attractive as an international destination," he said.

The completed hotel will also feature new meeting spaces.

"Our conference facilities will be 300 square metres of very flexible function space, that will include a larger space, contiguous space, as well as break out rooms and board rooms," Mr Byron said.

"So it is quite a significant new offering for Canberra for meeting demand."
